Signs & Symptoms

Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) in children

Because children with ITP have low platelet counts, their blood does not clot properly. That means they may have a number of symptoms, including:

Easy bruising

Prolonged bleeding from wounds

Visible red or purple dots (petechiae)

Spontaneous nosebleeds

Bleeding gums, often during dental work

Keeping track of your child’s symptoms is something beneficial you can do every day! While your child may not have symptoms every day, you should continually keep a record of:

  • Each type of symptom
  • How often they occur
  • Whether they are mild or severe

Symptoms can range from mild to severe, and you should take different steps depending on how severe they become.
